Northfielders work together to feed children worldwide

By engaging with the community in which you live through service and giving, you will be happier, healthier and live longer, says Candy Taylor, executive director of 5th Bridge in Northfield, an organization that encourages the habits of volunteerism and philanthropy.

Taylor’s statement is not simply opinion, but fact, according to several studies linking improved mental and physical health to giving of one’s time and resources.

If that’s the case, the people of Northfield — a town with a volunteer base that exceeds the national average — may find themselves topping the list for age longevity as well, in part thanks to the efforts of Taylor and 5th Bridge.

What women want: Four Wasecans talk about marriage and what they are looking for from their husbands

When women gather together, it’s often natural that the topic of conversation turns to that of husbands or significant others. Whether with intention to seek understanding, be comforted by knowing that other women, too, have marital concerns, or to gather advice, it’s a type of “friend therapy” that is unlike any other.

Four Waseca women, who have celebrated anywhere from 10 to 32 years of marriage with their husbands, gathered together to talk about what makes a good marriage and what women want from their husbands. The following is what Keri Clemons, Chris Krause, Ann Kaiser and Julie Oslund had to share with readers of Girlfriends.

Faribault Chatfest: Busy Bodies

With summer in full swing, Faribault mothers get creative in finding activities for the kids.

The bell rings for the final time and school is out for the summer. The kids are overjoyed, but mothers may be left wondering how will they ever keep their children busy during the long summer hours.

Girlfriends gathered with five Faribault women — with children aging in range from 3 to 21 — to get their thoughts on summer activities that will keep kids entertained, involved and responsible. Ideas stemming from their own childhood experiences, to sports, to family activities were discussed, providing offerings that will surely inspire moms throughout the region.
